Knit needs a little more care than a cotton onesie. In return, it holds its shape and softens with every wash. Here is how to keep the fit you paid for.

Washing

Wash cold on the gentle cycle, or by hand. Use a mild detergent. Skip fabric softener and bleach; both break down the fibers over time. Turn the piece inside out to protect the stitch surface.

Drying

Lay flat to dry. Press out extra water with a towel first, then reshape while damp so the sleeves and body sit straight. This is the step that matters most. Machine drying on regular heat is the number one reason a well fitting piece stops fitting, and it has nothing to do with sizing. If you must use the dryer, tumble on low and remove while slightly damp.

Storing

Fold, do not hang. Hangers stretch the shoulders of knit garments. Between babies, store clean and folded in a breathable cotton bag, away from direct sun.

Everyday messes

Milk and spit-up: rinse in cold water as soon as you are able, then wash as usual. Blowouts: scrape off what you are able, soak in cold water with a little detergent for 30 minutes, then wash cold. Hot water sets protein stains, so keep everything cold until the stain is gone.

Pilling

A few pills after regular wear are normal for natural cotton. A fabric comb or sweater stone every few weeks lifts them off without damaging the knit.

Passing it down

A piece washed and dried this way should be ready for a second baby and a third. That is what these knits are made for.
